Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Hi,
before I install Start++ on my machine, I tested it in a Virtual Machine. It seems, that the start menu integration of start++ won't work. Every search or other command opens a new window, not like on this page. Which means, if i type "g start++" only a new IE7 windows opens with google search for start++.
Is it a configuration problem, or another? Maybe there are compatibility issues with the "old" Windows Theme? Is the Aero Theme necessary for start++?
Vista Business English, with all updates, c++ library is installed, start++ 0.7.5.
Any ideas?
regards

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Brandon will have to answer you about the aero theme, but just to make sure, check the Start Gadgets tab in start++ to see if the "g" gadget is there. If it's not, it may have had a problem during the initial installation of the gadget.
Either way, Brandon will have to help you on this, but it will be easier for him if you can check this detail.
ALSO, if the gadget IS installed correctly, maybe start++ is just slow to "catch" the start menu. On my machine, I sometime have to wait a few seconds before start++ picks up the start menu and actually displays the gadgets there...

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Hi, thanks for the help. The Start Gadgets tab is available, inclusive all standard Gadgets (Google, Google Images, Wikipedia, ...), but nothing of them works. For example, "w enterprise" opens a IE7 wikipedia window with the results, instead to show the results in the startmenu.
Also to wait a few seconds, or minutes doesn't help. regards

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Are you pressing enter? The search results open in a new window if you press enter. They only show up in the start menu itself "as you type."
Does anything at all show up in the start menu when you type one of those commands? (Like "g test"?) Could you post a screenshot?
Is your machine running in a VM now? Is it a non-English system or anything? (should work I think, but not tested)

No, I don't press enter. Here is a shot what is shown in the start menu. Yes the (test) machine is an English Vista version, running in a VM, so no WDDM Driver or Aero Effects. Are WDDM Driver or Aero required for start++? The problem occur with all Gadgets. Shot Thanks

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
WDDM / Aero are not required. However, gadgets don't work right now with the Classic or Standard themes. Looks like the structure of the Start Menu window hierarchy is different in those modes. Apparently not many people run in that mode since no one has posted about it before :)
If you switch to Vista Basic it should work. I'll see if I can get it working in Classic soon.

Which theme are you talking about? "Windows Standard?" Does it work if you switch to the Vista Basic theme? Do you get any errors with Start++ loads? Definitely need more details to help you.

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Hi, today I installed Start++ 0.7.7 on my physical machine with the Aero Theme. First the bad news, I still get the hook.dll error message and have to install the C++ redist. package. The next problem was, that the default Start Gadgets weren't installed. In c:\user\myuser\appdata\local\start++ the startgadgets.xml was blank, and so in the configuration properties, no StartGadgets were available. I copied the xml (which comprised the necessary content) from the program path to the user path. After this I restart the tool and get an error message "no string found" (I can't remember the message in detail). Now the good news :-). The first time start++ works with start menu integration, but (bad news again) only until I restart start++ then the xml was blank again ???
It seems that I'm the only one with huge problems with the tool. Any ideas Brandon?

That's very strange. Sounds like it's having a problem parsing or serializing the XML. What language/local is your OS version?

Hi Brandon, the Version 0.7.8 seems to work in the Virtual Machine . Tomorrow I'll try it on my physical. I'm using Vista Business the English version.

Re: Search always opens a new window, Startmenu integration won't work
Sorry for hijacking this post, but I have exactly the same problems as the poster:
The file StartGadgets.xml in my Local Appdata starts off empty. When I try to copy it from the program files folder, it works - temporarily. It soon complains about that empty string.
I'm using Vista Business, english version but with Danish regional settings. UAC is enabled as well.
Start++ is the newest version (0.7.9.0)
Thanks, Frank

The UI integration is working in your screenshot. But you aren't seeing the gadget, just the regular starlet. If you look in the config UI, do you have a gadget associated with the "g" command?
